Vacation Ideas

Myrtle Beach, SC

Information and advice from real families to help you plan a better family vacation.

Myrtle Beach (and surrounding beaches) is a great stretch of beach in northern South Carolina. There are many affordable beachfront hotels and kid-friendly attractions and activities, making it a very popular vacation spot for families.

  • Play on the beach!
  • Enjoy hotel pools and water slides
  • Ripley’s Aquarium
  • Pirate’s Voyage Dinner Show
  • WonderWorks
  • Rides, fun restaurants, and shops at Broadway at the Beach
  • SkyWheel Myrtle Beach
  • Family Kingdom Amusement Park
  • Lots of mini golf places
  • Medieval Times Dinner Show
  • Hollywood Wax Museum
  • Ripley’s Believe It or Not
  • Myrtle Waves Water Park
There are a lot of hotels in Myrtle Beach, but not all of them are good. Some look fine online, but in reality are pretty run-down and some are downright dirty. Here are some beachfront properties we have tried: Recommend: (Generally, the name-brand hotels a few others are clean and of good quality. All of these are oceanfront.)
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton – newer resort with spacious ocean-view balcony rooms, interior hallways, an indoor waterpark area with waterslides and a lazy river, and a delicious free breakfast.
  • Courtyard and Springhill Suites by Marriott – typical clean Marriott property rooms with oceanview balcony rooms, interior hallways, and access to the pools, lazy river, and indoor water slides at 3 neighboring hotels. The only downside to this is it can feel spread out if you have multiple kids wanting to go to different areas.
  • The Breakers – while I prefer the Courtyard and Springhill Suites next door, this hotel shares all the same pool amenities, still has nice clean rooms, and is often a little less expenive than the Marriott properies next door.
  • Hilton Grand Vacations Club Myrtle Beach – there are actually several HGVC properties in the area and all are good. These are technically timeshare properties which means you can find multi-bedroom suites with kitchens which is great for larger families. You can find timeshare trades through RCI and Redweek, but these properties also show up on Expedia.
Good, not great, but they offer multi-bedroom suites: (There are a lot of condo and timeshare properties. These are great for having more space, but the quality can vary from suite to suite. Read reviews on VRBO to make sure you are renting one of the good suites.)
  • Dunes Village Resort – we like the indoor water park building at this one, but the condos are hit or miss for cleanliness and if they are updated or not
  • Camelot by the Sea – most condos have been renovated and are nice. Check and make sure you’re reserving one of the updated ones, otherwise we do not recommend this resort.
  • Carolinian Beach Resort – we had a pretty nice condo, but another friend in the same building had one that was quite dirty. The quality seems to vary a bit. But they do have a lazy river and pool.
Do NOT recommend:
  • Crown Reef Resort – don’t get sucked in by the water park. The rooms are dirty, run-down, and uncomfortable.
  • Atlantica
  • Compass Cove – this place has apparently done renovations recently and we are told it’s better, but based on previous experience, it was really bad. I’m not sure if new paint and furniture can turn this one around. The pictures are not what they seem.

  • Hotels: You can usually find pretty affordable beachfront hotels, but don’t go TOO cheap. Read reviews and check out our recommendations above. Cheap can mean dirty in Myrtle.
  • Attractions: The attractions are what can make Myrtle Beach expensive. Check out the attractions and prices in advance and keep an overall budget in mind.
  • Free: The beach is free! Most of your time can be spent enjoying the beach and the pools at your hotel.
  • Food: There are affordable restaurant options all around. You may also want to consider booking a suite/condo with a kitchen so you can make some of your own food to save money.
  • Beach Gear: If you can drive to the area, bring your own beach chairs, umbrellas, sand toys, boogie boards, etc. Or check and see if your condo includes this equipment or if you hotel rents it.
MOST places in Myrtle Beach are family-friendly. But here are a few kid favorites:
  • Pirate’s Voyage or Medieval Times Dinner Shows – eat while watching an exciting show!
  • The Hangout – lots of indoor and outdoor seating, live music, places for kids to run around and play, and kid-friendly foof – this one is a favorite!
  • DinoLand Cafe – if you have a kid that loves dinosaurs, they’ll love this themed restaurant.
  • Rip Tydz – if you want a beachy-vibe with a view of the water, this is one of several kid-friendly options.
  • Dave & Buster’s at Broadway at the Beach – not unique to Myrtle Beach, but kids will love the giant arcade!
We could probably list at least 30 more…there are plenty!
  • Even if you go to Myrtle Beach expecting to spend most of your time at the beach and pool, it can be hard to avoid the attractions. Kids will see billboards, airplanes carrying banner ads, giant ferris wheels that are hard to avoid, etc. It may be good to set some expectations about attractions before your trip.
  • Our personal favorite attractions that we feel are worth the cost are Ripley’s Aquarium and Pirate’s Voyage.
  • Crowds can get pretty large on the beach on nice-weather days. Make sure you’re keeping an eye on your kids at all times.
  • Rip Currents can happen along Myrtle Beach. Not very often, but we have seen them. Learn how to spot a rip current and what to do if you get stuck in one and teach this to your kids.
  • Don’t let your kids dig too big of a hole in the sand (these are dangerous and can collapse on them), and fill in your holes when you’re done (sea turtles lay eggs around Myrtle Beach and this makes sure they don’t get stuck in a hole.)
