Northern Great Lakes Loop

Lake Michigan and Lake Superior are beautiful lakes to visit in the summer.

Full itinerary coming soon!

A possible loop tour of the area could include:
  • Sleeping Bear Dunes NLS – MI
  • Traverse City, MI – Wineries and orchards
  • Pictured Rocks NLS – MI
  • Copper Harbor and scenic drives on the Keweenaw Peninsula, MI
  • Waterfalls in the western Upper Peninsula, MI
  • Apostle Islands NLS and Bayfield, WI
  • North Shore MN State Parks
Sleeping Bear Dunes area rentals: Traverse City area:
  • The Beach Haus – lakefront with a beach, rooms with 2 queens and balconies
  • Tamarack Lodge – lakefront with a beach, 2-bedroom suites
  • Grand Traverse Resort and Spa – this one is pricier but it has 3 pools (one of them indoor with water slides), onsite dining, a spa, a golf course, and other great resort amenities.
  • Great Wolf Lodge Traverse City – go all out with a resort your kids will love! They have a huge indoor water park, arcade, bowling alley, and more. Visit local wineries during some of the day, then let your kids run wild at a water park for the rest. But if you plan to spend most of your time enjoying the area and less time at your hotel/resort, then skip this one.
Pictured Rocks area: Keweenaw Peninsula area:
There aren’t as many lodging options in some of these areas, and they are popular during the summer, so lodging will be your biggest cost. Other costs could include:
  • Canoe or kayak rental: $55/canoe, $74/double kayak
  • Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Pass – $25
  • Pictured Rocks Cruise – Adults: $46-54, Children 4-12: $21, Children under 4: $1
  • Apostle Islands Cruise – Adults: $53, Children 6-12: $32, Children under 6: $4
  • There are several places you can do a kayak or canoe trip around the Great Lakes, but I would recommend doing these with kids 5 and up. With that said, we have done it with toddlers (in canoes, not kayaks) and it was possible but not the easiest to get them to sit still for hours and not lean over too far. I also recommend double kayaks, even for older kids and teens because it can get tiring and the winds can make it difficult on your own in some areas.
  • The boat cruises are great for seeing all the cool rock formations in Pictured Rocks and Apostle Islands National Lakeshores. Book cruises in advance, get there early to get in line, and get seats on the top deck near the front or back so kids can have unobstructed views.
