Vacation Ideas

Asheville, North Carolina

Information and advice from real families to help you plan a better family vacation.

Asheville, NC is a beautiful city in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Asheville has a fun, artistic culture with local crafters and artists, live music venues, museums, great restaurants, historical sites like Biltmore House, and lots of kid-friendly breweries! There are also many great outdoor adventures to do in the surrounding area for all ranges of ages and activity levels. Swim in a waterfall, tour the closest thing we have to a castle in the US, and hang out at quirky breweries, all in the same area!

Itinerary coming soon!

Biltmore Estate — America’s largest home with gardens, house tours, restaurants, a winery, and hiking and bike trails. The prices are a bit expensive, but it is a beautiful place. We most recommend this for older kids and teens who will enjoy seeing and learning the history of the house.
Spend time in downtown Asheville walking around, checking out murals, shops, art galleries, and street performers.
Asheville Art Museum — engaging exhibits and free hands-on areas for kids.
Asheville Pinball Museum – 40 pinball games and 40 classic video games that you can play as much as you want for $17.
Breweries – there are so many in this area and many are kid-friendly! A few favorites:
  • Sierra Nevada (south of Asheville – huge backyard with kids play areas and live music, plus a great indoor restaurant)
  • Whistle Hop (East of Asheville – mini-golf, games, a slide, and more to entertain kids plus a unique selection of beverages)
  • Closer to Asheville proper – Highland, Pisgah, and Hi-Wire all have outside areas where kids can run around a bit while parents sip.
  • There are also breweries downtown that won’t have the large outdoor space of others, but will still be ok with kids and many have board and card games you can pick up and enjoy while you sit at your table.
Drive parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway for scenic lookouts.
Tube down a river! For a slower, relaxing ride, check out Zen Tubing. This option is closer to Asheville proper. Or if you want a more exciting ride with a bit more rapids, check out Green River Adventures south of Asheville in Saluda. They also have options to whitewater kayak if you are adventure seekers!
Sliding Rock – slide down a 60ft. natural smooth rock face into a cool pool of water. This is a popular destination in the summer, so we recommend getting there early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds. There is a fee of $5 per person. You must be able to swim! The water at the bottom is 8-10 feet deep, cold, and there’s a slight current. It’s an exhilarating and fun experience!
Go on a hike! There are so many great hikes in the area! A few favorites:
  • Dupont Forest waterfalls – there are 3 waterfalls in one area, and you can hike to one or all 3 of them in one trip.
  • Moore’s Cove Falls – an easy 1.3 mile trail that leads to a waterfall that you can walk behind. A family-friendly favorite!
  • Skinny Dip Falls – a one-mile trail to a waterfall with a swimming hole
  • Graveyard Fields – an easy loop hike with several small waterfalls to explore and areas for kids to climb on rocks.
  • Black Balsam Knob – this 1.4 mile trail takes you to the top of a bald knob where you get 360 views of the mountains without any trees in your way. It can get sunny and windy, but is worth it and unlike other trails in the area.
  • Looking Glass Rock – this is not the easiest hike and is only recommended for older kids and teens and people in good shape, but the views from the top of the huge rock are awesome!
Swim in a waterfall! You can wade and even swim in several waterfalls in the area (mostly south of Asheville). These include Looking Glass Falls (Pisgah National Forest near Sliding Rock), Hooker Falls (Dupont State Forest), Skinny Dip Falls (off the Blue Ridge Parkway), and more.
Play in a creek – Kids can spend hours splashing around in a mountain creek and having the best time! There are several areas you can play in a creek, but a favorite is playing in the Davidson River along Pishah Highway. You can combine this with seeing Looking Glass Falls, doing Sliding Rock, or hiking to Moore Cove Falls – all of these are in close promity to each other. And if you want some extra adrenaline – there is a cilff you can jump off of at the Coon Tree Picnic Area.

Cabin Rentals

Asheville is in the mountains, so there are a lot of great cabin rentals outside the city center. But you’ll want to consider the location. Plan out what activities you want to do and try to stay near them. A cabin might not seem far away on a map, but if it’s a winding drive up a mountain, it can add a lot of time to each trip. Here are a few good options: Closer to downtown and Biltmore:  Closer to Pisgah National Forest activities (look for something closer to Brevard):

Hotels

If you mostly plan to enjoy downtown, or enjoy Biltmore, or if you’d like to save money and enjoy the convenience of a hotel vs. a rental, here are some good options:
  • Embassy Suites Downtown – downtown so you can walk to things, multi-bedroom suites available, great free breakfast, indoor pool, and a rooftop restaurant and bar with great views.
  • Courtyard Asheville Biltmore Village – close to Biltmore, clean and comfortable rooms, indoor pool
  • Lantern Lodge – near Biltmore, multi-bedroom suites with kitchens and balconies, outdoor pool and hot tub
  • Splurge optionThe Omni Grove Park Inn – not cheap and best if you plan to spend some time enjoying your hotel. Gorgeous, historic hotel with an incredible spa, beautiful outdoor and indoor pools, great views of the mountains, multiple delicious restaurants, golf and a sports complex on site, and more. We recommend booking at booking.com to save and earn points, but check out their website to learn more about this famous hotel.

Camping

If you want to really experience the outdoors and save money, you can camp! There are multiple tent and RV campgrounds in the area. If you’ll be focused more on outdoor adventures around Pisgah, we recommend the North Mills River Campground.
  • Hiking and playing in waterfalls are free! And sometimes much more memorable than paid attractions. Don’t be afraid of trying outdoor activities if you haven’t done much of them before.
  • Your biggest expense will be lodging. Consider how much time you’ll be spending there and if you want to splurge on a nice cabin rental or save money and stay in a hotel chain. Also consider if you want a kitchen so you can prepare your own meals, or if you want a hotel with a free breakfast.
  • Drive to save on airfare. Asheville is within a day’s drive for many in the East. Having a car will enable you to easily get around to different locations.
There are plenty of kid-friendly options around Asheville! A few of our kid’s favorites:
  • If you plan to do some hiking, make sure you pack shoes with good tread for everyone.
  • If you have a baby or toddler, having a back carrier will be best for hiking and walking around.
  • If you’re going during hot weather, plan to do a water activity like wading in creeks or swimming in a waterfall – it’s so much fun! But come prepared with water shoes or sport sandals, comfortable bathing suits, and a water-proof phone case.
  • Save Biltmore for when your kids are 10+ and will enjoy learning about the house during the tour. It’s an expensive activity to do with bored kids who just want to go outside and play.
